Fleet charging depot electrical planning in Calgary

A fleet charging project should begin with the vehicle duty cycle, not a charger count. Establish how much energy each vehicle needs between return and dispatch, then assess the site’s capacity and charging arrangement. Future fleet growth and civil pathways belong in the same plan.

CCT 01What the first visit needs to establish

Build a vehicle schedule showing present and planned vehicles, return times, next departures and charging constraints. Distinguish a firm procurement plan from a future option. A depot with predictable overnight dwell has a different brief from vehicles returning intermittently throughout the day.

Ask the fleet manager and electrical designer to agree the planning assumptions. Charger nameplate ratings do not establish the energy delivered to a real fleet in its available window. Include vehicle compatibility and operating conditions in the equipment supplier's review.

CCT 02What to include in the work order

Define electrical distribution, chargers, mounting or foundations, trenching, restoration, communications, software, commissioning and staff training. Identify responsibility for utility coordination and any operating subscriptions. Separate equipment ownership from responsibility for maintaining the finished service.

Ask the proposal to explain what happens when communications fail, a charger is unavailable or a vehicle returns late. Those operational questions belong in the design brief, not just the equipment sales discussion. The workplace and fleet charging guide covers the broader delivery process.

CCT 03What changes the price and schedule

Available capacity, civil routes, charger mix and software commitments can outweigh the visible charger hardware cost. Compare alternatives using the same fleet assumptions and installed scope. Show future-ready pathways separately from chargers needed on day one.

If a service change is proposed, establish utility feasibility early.1 Request separate milestones for the utility, civil construction, electrical completion and vehicle commissioning. A charger delivery date does not determine when the depot can support the operating fleet.

CCT 04Information to send with your request

  • Vehicle models, confirmed purchase schedule and expected depot energy needs.
  • Arrival and departure patterns, including exceptions and seasonal operations.
  • Parking and circulation plan, accessible work areas and future expansion space.
  • Existing service information, demand records and landlord permissions.
  • Software, billing, network and fleet-management requirements.
  • Who owns operations, maintenance and driver training after installation.

CCT 05What a completed job should leave you with

Accept the system against agreed operating scenarios and record the commissioning results. Keep access credentials under the owner's control and document subscriptions, service contacts and equipment warranties. Have the fleet team demonstrate that it can identify a failed charging session and take the planned next step.

Retain the design assumptions with the project file. Adding vehicles changes the operating problem even when spare parking spaces remain. Periodic review should compare actual charging performance with the planned duty cycle before more hardware is ordered.

Questions people ask

Do I need one charger per vehicle?
That depends on energy needs, available dwell time, operations and the proposed charging arrangement. The design should demonstrate how the fleet’s schedule will be supported.
Does a high-power charger always mean faster fleet turnaround?
No. Vehicle limits, site capacity, sharing arrangements and time connected all matter. Compare the full operating plan rather than charger ratings alone.
