CCT 01Start with the right decision

Obsolete equipment, a capacity change and a reliability concern can each justify different work. Establish the condition and ratings of the existing system, what must remain in service and what the replacement must support. A matching nameplate current alone does not establish an interchangeable replacement. Protection, available fault current, physical layout and utility interfaces need design review.

CCT 02What to put in the scope

Use this as a discussion checklist. The contract should assign each item to a named party and identify anything excluded. Ask for unclear existing conditions to be investigated before they become assumptions in a fixed price.

CCT 03Who needs to coordinate

A utility transformer and an owner’s dry-type transformer sit on different sides of the responsibility boundary. Identify ownership before assigning work. Structural support, ventilation, fire separations and the route used to move equipment into the room may require other disciplines.

CCT 04A practical project sequence

Approve dimensions and interfaces before fabrication. Record lead times in the supplier’s quotation and confirm them again before the outage is booked. Prepare the replacement and access route in advance where practical. The qualified project team must define isolation, testing and the conditions for return to service.

CCT 05What changes the price

A low equipment price can exclude shipping, rigging, temporary distribution, disposal, cable extensions, controls and after-hours attendance. Ask for each exclusion to be resolved. Do not accept an unreviewed substitute merely because it is available sooner.

CCT 06Calgary requirements and safety

• Calgary requires plans and drawings for new construction or service upgrades of 600 A and higher, including all high-voltage installations. ¹
• OHS Code Part 15 (Managing the Control of Hazardous Energy) requires hazardous energy to be isolated with a secured energy-isolating device before equipment is serviced, repaired, tested, adjusted or inspected. ²

CCT 07What the owner should receive

Request factory and field test documents where specified, approved settings, updated drawings, equipment manuals, spare-parts information and operator orientation. Equipment labels and the owner’s maintenance plan should match the installed system.

Keep proposed work, accepted changes, inspection evidence and remaining deficiencies together. A verbal assurance is difficult for the next property manager or maintenance contractor to use.
