CT metering explained in Calgary
Metering arrangements belong in the service design before the switchboard is ordered.
CCT 01What current transformers do
Current transformers allow a metering system to measure a larger circuit through an instrument arrangement. The utility meter, instrument components and customer equipment have coordinated requirements. This is background for owners, not a guide to wiring or working on metering equipment.
CCT 02The ENMAX project trigger
ENMAX’s energization guidance calls for CT metering for services over 200 A. Use the current CT request and checklist to establish the accepted arrangement for the site. Do not treat a generic manufacturer drawing as utility approval. 1
CCT 03Assign supply and installation responsibilities
The designer and contractor should establish exactly which equipment the customer provides and what ENMAX supplies or installs. Include the enclosure, access, service conductors and interfaces in the responsibility matrix. Confirm requirements with ENMAX before procurement.
CCT 04Coordinate space and access
Metering provisions affect equipment dimensions and the electrical-room layout. Service access, working space and the utility’s requirements need to be considered together. Retrofitting an unsuitable arrangement after equipment delivery can disrupt both cost and schedule.
CCT 05Connect metering to energization
The metering arrangement is one part of the path to power. Inspection release, utility readiness and retailer arrangements must also be coordinated. ENMAX requires a new or upgraded site to pass inspection before energization. 1
CCT 06Retain the accepted documents
Keep the approved metering arrangement with the final single-line drawing and utility correspondence. If the building later changes service or subdivides tenancy, those documents provide the starting point for the next assessment.

These pages concern Calgary. Confirm the authority and wire-service provider for Airdrie, Rocky View County or another neighbouring municipality. The applicable permits and connection process may differ.
Electrical safety
This is planning information, not instructions for electrical work. Do not open equipment, approach exposed energized parts or attempt repairs. Use qualified professionals and an appropriate safety plan. For immediate danger, fire or a person in contact with electricity, call 911.
Questions people ask
What should I provide to obtain a useful quotation?
Describe the building, existing system, intended outcome, drawings status and operating constraints. For ct metering explained, include the equipment and documents identified in this guide. Ask the bidder to state assumptions and exclusions.
Does this website carry out electrical work?
No. Calgary Commercial Electrician is a planning reference. It does not employ an installation crew, hold itself out as an electrical contractor or certify contractors. Any installation agreement is with the contractor you choose.
Can a calculator replace a design or load calculation?
No. The tools show planning arithmetic and assumptions. They do not establish code compliance, available capacity, conductor sizes or protective-device settings. Have the proposed work assessed by qualified professionals.
Can the work happen while the building stays occupied?
That depends on the system, scope and safe work plan. Explain which operations must continue and which interruptions can be arranged. Have the contractor and responsible designer identify shutdown and temporary-service requirements before agreeing a schedule.
