EV parkade capacity calculator
How many chargers a building’s spare capacity supports at full power, how many it supports under load management, and the energy each stall gets overnight.
CCT 01How it works
Without an energy management system, every charger counts at its full rating; in apartment-type buildings EV supply equipment is taken at 100% when calculating suite feeders1. So chargers supported = spare kW ÷ charger kW.
With load management, the simultaneous charger count = spare kW ÷ the minimum active charging power. Energy per requested stall overnight = spare kW × hours ÷ stalls (capped at what one charger can deliver). When the requested stall count exceeds the simultaneous count, the energy estimate assumes a compatible system can rotate charging among stalls through the full window; it is not a promise that every stall charges continuously.
CCT 02Assumptions and limits
- Loads are treated as simultaneous. In practice not every car charges every night, which is exactly what load management exploits.
- A charger whose current setting a user can change without an electrician must be counted at its maximum2.
- Billing each stall for energy by the kWh brings in Measurement Canada requirements; see condo board EV charging.
Questions people ask
How many EV chargers can our condo parkade support?
It depends on spare capacity, not stall count. Put the spare kW from a load study above: without load management it is spare kW ÷ charger kW; with it, many more chargers share the same capacity. Read EV charging for condos.
Is 1.4 kW per car enough?
Over a 10-hour night that is 14 kWh, which covers many daily commutes. The calculator shows kWh per stall for your inputs; Calgary winters raise consumption.
Do we need an engineer?
For a building-wide installation, a load study and design are usually the first step, and larger services need drawings. See engineer vs contractor.
