Emergency power for life safety and optional standby power for business continuity are not interchangeable categories. Identify the required system, the loads served and acceptable interruption before requesting equipment prices. Motors, elevators, cooling and electronic loads can impose requirements beyond the sum of running watts.

Use this as a discussion checklist. The contract should assign each item to a named party and identify anything excluded. Ask for unclear existing conditions to be investigated before they become assumptions in a fixed price.

CCT 03Who needs to coordinate

Electrical, mechanical, structural and fire-safety decisions meet at this project. Confirm the permitted location, fuel arrangements, exhaust route and maintenance access. Utility requirements must be reviewed if the design includes parallel operation; a transfer switch specification is not sufficient by itself.

CCT 04A practical project sequence

Set the operating requirements, commission the design and obtain the required approvals. Coordinate equipment delivery and site works before scheduling building interruptions. The commissioning plan should prove the intended loads and transfer behaviour under the responsible professionals’ supervision.

Budget for installation and ownership together: fuel systems, enclosure, transfer switches, civil works, testing and maintenance. Published current product standards may differ from the edition referenced by applicable codes; the designer must establish the governing requirement.

CCT 06Calgary requirements and safety

• Calgary Fire Department's guide says NFC(AE) Section 6.5 requires emergency generators to be maintained to CSA C282-15, with monthly, 6-month, annual and 5-year inspection, testing and maintenance. ¹
• The newest edition of CSA C282 is the eighth, CSA C282:24, which supersedes the 2019, 2015 and earlier editions. Calgary's guidance still cites C282-15. ²

CCT 07What the owner should receive

Keep test records, operating instructions, fuel arrangements, service contacts and a maintenance calendar. Building staff should understand the system’s supported loads and limits without needing to operate electrical equipment beyond their training.

Keep proposed work, accepted changes, inspection evidence and remaining deficiencies together. A verbal assurance is difficult for the next property manager or maintenance contractor to use.
