CCT 01Start with the right decision

Start with the demand history, an equipment survey and the proposed load. The limiting component could be the utility supply, transformer, service conductors, switchboard or a downstream feeder. Replacing one of those components without checking the others can leave the building with the same usable capacity. Compare a physical upgrade with properly designed load management before committing to equipment.

CCT 02What to put in the scope

Use this as a discussion checklist. The contract should assign each item to a named party and identify anything excluded. Ask for unclear existing conditions to be investigated before they become assumptions in a fixed price.

CCT 03Who needs to coordinate

The owner authorizes the project and provides access and operating constraints. The engineer and contractor define the customer-side system. ENMAX determines the utility-side connection work and its estimate. The electricity retailer, metering arrangements and City inspection release must also be coordinated; none is replaced by an equipment purchase order.

CCT 04A practical project sequence

Establish utility feasibility before ordering the switchboard. Confirm dimensions, ratings, access and metering arrangements through the design and submittal process. A shutdown should have a named coordinator, tenant notices, an equipment restart plan and a contingency if inspection or energization cannot proceed.

CCT 05What changes the price

Existing electrical-room space, equipment access, cable routes and temporary power can matter as much as service size. Ask for utility contribution, contractor work, engineering, civil restoration and temporary operations as distinct budget lines. An ENMAX investment allowance reduces eligible utility cost; it is not a fixed installed price.

CCT 06Calgary requirements and safety

• Calgary requires plans and drawings for new construction or service upgrades of 600 A and higher, including all high-voltage installations. ¹
• ENMAX services rated over 200 A must submit a CT (current transformer) request form and CT meter installation checklist. ²
• A new or upgraded site must be approved by the electrical inspection authority, following the ENMAX metering standard, before ENMAX energizes it; energization is requested through the retailer. ²

CCT 07What the owner should receive

Keep the accepted utility scope, final single-line drawing, settings and testing records, inspection release and updated operating instructions together. Record the new service information for future tenant and EV applications.

Keep proposed work, accepted changes, inspection evidence and remaining deficiencies together. A verbal assurance is difficult for the next property manager or maintenance contractor to use.
