CCT 01What the first visit needs to establish

A coffee machine that trips the lunchroom circuit and a new three-phase dishwasher need different investigations. Describe whether the equipment is new, replacing an existing unit or causing a fault. A replacement with the same plug shape is not automatically an electrical match.

The site assessment should establish the equipment supply, the existing panel and circuit arrangement, and whether the proposed connection has enough capacity. Spare spaces in a panel do not prove spare electrical capacity. Ask the contractor to identify what must be confirmed on site and what the supplier must provide before the installation can be priced.

CCT 02What to include in the work order

Have the quotation identify the circuit's destination and the exact appliance it serves. Include the connection method, route, any local disconnect, labelling, testing and the responsible permit applicant. New wiring falls within Calgary's electrical permitting process.¹

Separate the electrical work from cutting millwork, moving the appliance, plumbing, wall repair and equipment commissioning. A restaurant counter with stone finishes can make a short cable run more disruptive than a much longer run above an accessible ceiling. Give the contractor permission to assess the route before treating the estimate as a fixed price.

CCT 03What changes the price and schedule

Distance matters, but access often matters more. Finished ceilings, concrete penetrations, occupied offices and a panel in another tenant's space all change labour and coordination. A quote based on an accessible ceiling should say so; it should not quietly assume the route exists.

Request a separate price or clear allowance if a panel change, transformer or service assessment may be required. If several appliances are planned, assess the equipment schedule together. CCT 04Information to send with your request

• Equipment make, model and a legible manufacturer specification or externally visible nameplate photo.
• Whether the unit is purchased, its arrival date and who handles delivery and commissioning.
• Proposed location, building and suite address, and an existing floor plan if available.
• Photos of the work area and the closed panel label or existing circuit directory, taken without opening equipment.
• Business hours, acceptable interruption windows and landlord approval contact.
• Any other equipment being added this year so capacity can be assessed together.

CCT 05What a completed job should leave you with

Ask for the final circuit identification, the equipment connection information, inspection status where applicable and a description of any excluded work. Check that the equipment supplier's commissioning requirement has an owner. An installed receptacle is not the same as an appliance ready for use.

Keep the revised panel directory with the building records and give staff a clear fault-reporting contact. If the original complaint was repeated tripping, the close-out should describe the cause found and the work completed; a larger breaker is not a diagnosis.
