Planned commercial electrical shutdown work in Calgary

A successful shutdown requires a written operating plan around the electrical work. Identify affected systems, shutdown and restart owners, the approved window and the decision point for postponing. Do not treat the contractor’s expected repair duration as the complete outage duration.

CCT 01What the first visit needs to establish

Start with the reason for the outage and a verified list of affected distribution. Include IT, security, access control, refrigeration, pumps, elevators and any tenant-specific equipment in the coordination review. The electrical contractor and system specialists should establish the actual dependencies.

Identify which supply work belongs to the utility. ENMAX provides a dedicated process for planned maintenance outages.1 Confirm its role and booking requirements rather than assuming a building contractor can handle every isolation point.

CCT 02What to include in the work order

The work package should cover preparation, affected-system coordination, the electrical job, inspections or testing, restoration and acceptance. Name the party responsible for every shutdown and restart task. Have the qualified team establish safe-work and isolation procedures; this guide addresses owner coordination only.

Keep optional work out of the critical outage scope unless its effect on time and risk has been assessed. A long list of small additional tasks can consume the contingency needed to restore the building. Price and schedule them explicitly rather than adding them informally on the night.

CCT 03What changes the price and schedule

After-hours attendance, utility work, specialist support, access and contingency affect cost. Ask bidders to show the resources assumed for the approved window and the consequences of a postponement. Compare the full shutdown package, including restart support, rather than electrical labour alone.

Decide in advance what happens if parts, permits or specialist attendance are missing. Set a readiness review before affected tenants make irreversible operational arrangements. The owner's shutdown guide includes a practical coordination checklist.

CCT 04Information to send with your request

  • Reason for the shutdown, reviewed scope and affected distribution drawings.
  • Tenant and specialist contacts with after-hours decision authority.
  • Critical loads, operating constraints and approved interruption window.
  • Utility involvement, confirmed equipment delivery and inspection dependencies.
  • Readiness-review date, cancellation criteria and restoration priorities.
  • Owner acceptance process and the location of the final records.

CCT 05What a completed job should leave you with

Complete an agreed restoration checklist with the responsible operators, not only an electrical energization check. Record unresolved alarms, equipment faults and deferred work with a named owner. Tell affected parties when their systems have been handed back through the approved communication plan.

Retain the final work report, test results, updated drawings and a short review of anything that changed during the outage. Those records make the next shutdown easier to plan and reduce reliance on one person's memory.

Questions people ask

Can the shutdown fit into one evening?
A contractor can propose a window based on the reviewed scope and resources. Dependencies, findings and restoration requirements need explicit allowances and a contingency plan.
Does power being back on mean the building is ready?
No. Affected systems may need their own checks and restart procedures by the responsible operators or specialists before normal operations resume.
