Commercial sign power and lighting repairs in Calgary
A dark storefront sign may have a supply fault, a control problem or a failed component inside the sign. A new sign also brings a scope split between the sign vendor, electrician and landlord. Identify who owns each part before booking access equipment or the installation crew.
CCT 01What the first visit needs to establish
Record whether the whole sign is dark, only part is dark, or the hours are wrong. Note whether adjacent signs or exterior lights are affected and when the issue first appeared. That helps the contractor plan the investigation without treating an observation as a diagnosis.
For a replacement, get the sign vendor's final electrical specification and drawing. The existing sign circuit should be assessed for the proposed equipment; neither the sign's dimensions nor the previous tenant's use proves compatibility. The same process applies when a landlord is converting a multi-tenant pylon sign to a different system.
CCT 02What to include in the work order
Use a written split: sign fabrication and internal components; building power and connection; mounting and waterproofing; controls; access equipment; permit responsibility. Calgary's sign approval process is separate from electrical scope.1
Ask who attends if the sign vendor finds no power at the connection, and who handles a return visit if the supply is good but the sign is faulty. A joint appointment can be worthwhile when both teams need a lift or restricted storefront access. Preserve the warranty by agreeing who is permitted to alter the sign equipment.
CCT 03What changes the price and schedule
Height, parking-lot access, traffic control, weather exposure and the condition of the existing feed can dominate a small parts repair. Provide the mounting height and a wide photo of the approach. A contractor needs enough room to assess access; a close-up of the dark letters is not sufficient.
For rebranding, distinguish a repair from a new sign project. A landlord's written consent does not establish that municipal approvals are complete. Ask the vendor to confirm the relevant sign class and approval route, then have the electrical contractor price the connection against the same approved design.
CCT 04Information to send with your request
- Wide daytime photo showing the sign, wall or pole and access below.
- Close photo of the issue taken from a safe public or staff-accessible position.
- Sign vendor, model or drawing, and warranty information if known.
- Whether the fault affects the whole sign, individual letters or operating times.
- Landlord approval contact and any other tenants sharing the sign.
- Opening date or rebrand deadline, delivery date and permitted work hours.
CCT 05What a completed job should leave you with
Request a clear statement of the fault and repair, the controls setting, new component information and any remaining sign-vendor work. Confirm the sign operates in its intended schedule, including the responsibility for future clock changes or programming.
Retain the final sign drawing, permit references and warranty contacts together. For a shopping centre, record which tenant panel or landlord supply serves each sign. This simple ownership record reduces disputes when a tenant moves out and the next business expects the sign to be ready.
