Air compressor and shop machinery power in Calgary
Before buying or relocating shop equipment, compare its full electrical requirements with the building’s actual supply and capacity. Horsepower alone does not establish the installation scope. Include the motor, controls, accessories and commissioning requirements in the assessment.
CCT 01What the first visit needs to establish
Provide the machine model and manufacturer documents, not just the motor rating. A compressor package may include a dryer, drain system, heater or separate controls supply. Used equipment may arrive without all the documentation needed for an efficient installation.
For a relocation, record the old installation only as background. The new unit's supply, route and available capacity still need review. Ask the equipment supplier to identify approved operating configurations and any changes needed for the destination. The field evaluation guide covers equipment approval questions that should be resolved before the machine is scheduled for production.
CCT 02What to include in the work order
Set boundaries between electrical distribution, machine assembly, pneumatic or hydraulic connections, programming and production commissioning. Identify who is responsible for the equipment's internal controls and any manufacturer-only work. Include safe disconnection of the old installation when moving equipment between bays.
A larger machine may need more than a new feeder. Have the contractor identify whether the project calls for a transformer, distribution changes or an engineering assessment. Tie the scope to the intended use and duty, including other equipment expected to operate at the same time.
CCT 03What changes the price and schedule
Route length, physical access, machinery placement and compatible distribution equipment drive the quote. Moving a machine after the feeder has been installed can create a second project. Mark final locations and service access on a floor plan before approving the installation.
Ask bidders to separate the confirmed connection work from unresolved equipment or building modifications. Do not assume a phase converter or transformer is a universal fix; the supplier and electrical design team must establish an appropriate solution. Refer to three-phase power and the Calgary permit process when defining a larger change.
CCT 04Information to send with your request
- Machine specification, external nameplate photo and all accessory loads.
- New, used or imported status, with approval and service documents if available.
- Final floor position and access required for operation and servicing.
- Expected duty, other equipment running concurrently and planned future machines.
- Supplier or commissioning technician contact and target production date.
- Existing building drawings and landlord contact for distribution changes.
CCT 05What a completed job should leave you with
The close-out should distinguish a completed electrical supply from a machine accepted for production. Keep connection details, updated distribution records and manufacturer commissioning results. Arrange a documented handoff between the installer and the equipment specialist.
If production trials uncover a problem, record the operating conditions and actual fault rather than repeatedly restarting the machine. A useful job record gives the next specialist enough information to separate a supply problem, equipment fault and process issue.
Questions people ask
Is the motor horsepower enough for a quote?
Can used equipment be connected immediately?
